Estimate sailboat ownership cost in Montana
Sailboats trade horsepower for marina time. The engine is small; the slip, bottom, and standing rigging are not.
Montana is inland: Flathead Lake, Fort Peck, and a large river system. The season is short. AIS checkpoints are part of crossing the state with a wet hull. There is no ocean slip market.
Calculator defaults on this page are planning inputs, not a survey of Montana asking prices or marina invoices. Replace them with your listing and quotes.

What makes a sailboat expensive to keep
A cruising sailboat in this calculator is a 30-foot auxiliary with a small diesel, wet storage, and a lower insurance and maintenance percent than a center console. The purchase-price default is a planning input. A 1970s coastal cruiser and a new 30-footer are not the same market.
Fuel is the quiet line if you actually sail. It is not free if you motor every Sunday on a schedule. The diesel SFC constants are lower than gasoline, and 30 horsepower is not 300. Do not use that as permission to ignore the slip. Wet storage billed by the foot is why a modest sailboat can outspend a trailered bowrider.
This model does not itemize standing rigging, sails, or bottom paint. Those belong in the maintenance override when you have yard quotes. Winterization still applies in cold states. Insurance uses the same lower factor as pontoons unless you override it.
- Slip and months in the water. This is usually the dominant fixed line after the loan.
- Yard work. Paint, rigging, and sails are lumpy. Use the override rather than trusting a smooth 3% forever.
- Engine hours vs sailing hours. The fuel control is still hours times diesel SFC. If you motor, say so.
- State moorage markets. Coastal high-slip states in this model (including Florida, California, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington, and New Jersey) change the sailboat bill more than they change a trailered pontoon.
Montana rules that change the bill
Agency. Montana Department of Justice Motor Vehicle Division (registration) and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (boating). Official page: https://dojmt.gov/driving/vehicle-title-and-registration/.
Registration and titling. Titles vessels. Montana permanently registers boats, personal watercraft, and motorized pontoons through the Motor Vehicle Division. Montana boat registration is a Motor Vehicle Division title-and-registration task. FWP publishes access, AIS, and on-water rules. Many waters require invasive-species inspection or prevention measures before launch.
Sales or use tax (general). Montana has no statewide general sales tax. Local option taxes exist in some communities. Confirm any local tax or fee where you buy or keep the boat.
Boating education. Operator-age and education rules are state-specific and change. Read Montana Department of Justice Motor Vehicle Division (registration) and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (boating) rather than assuming a neighboring state's card is enough.
Water and climate in this model. Montana is inland: Flathead Lake, Fort Peck, and a large river system. The season is short. AIS checkpoints are part of crossing the state with a wet hull. There is no ocean slip market. This calculator adds a winterization line in cold states. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in Montana?
- Montana Department of Justice Motor Vehicle Division (registration) and Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (boating) is the agency to start with. Montana boat registration is a Motor Vehicle Division title-and-registration task. FWP publishes access, AIS, and on-water rules. Many waters require invasive-species inspection or prevention measures before launch.
- Does Montana charge sales or use tax on boats?
- Montana has no statewide general sales tax. Local option taxes exist in some communities. Confirm any local tax or fee where you buy or keep the boat.
- Why is diesel the sailboat default?
- Most auxiliary cruisers in this size use a small diesel. Switch to gasoline if that is what is in the boat.
- Does the calculator include slip waitlists or mooring balls?
- No. It prices a wet slip from length and a state per-foot assumption, or your override. A mooring or club launch needs your number.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
