Estimate pontoon ownership cost in Utah
Pontoons are social deck boats. The loan can look modest; furniture, a wet slip, and a bigger outboard are what usually move the monthly number.
Utah recreation is Lake Powell, Bear Lake, and high-mountain reservoirs—not a conventional ocean coast. Great Salt Lake is not a typical powerboat destination. AIS inspections and a short high-country season are the local cost context.
Calculator defaults on this page are planning inputs, not a survey of Utah asking prices or marina invoices. Replace them with your listing and quotes.

What makes a pontoon expensive to keep
A pontoon is a floating deck on two or three logs. People buy them for lakes, slow rivers, and protected bays—not for running an inlet in a steep chop. That mission is why this calculator’s pontoon defaults assume a trailerable 22-foot boat, a single mid-size outboard, and home trailer storage rather than a year-round coastal slip.
Purchase-price ranges are wide because the same silhouette can be a used two-log lake boat or a new tritoon with a 300-horse outboard and a full furniture package. This page does not publish a market index. Enter the asking price on the listing you are actually looking at. The ownership math after that is the same stack as every other type: loan or cash, insurance, parking, registration, fuel, and maintenance.
Pontoons are often cheaper to keep than a center console of the same length in this model: maintenance is a smaller percent of price, insurance uses the lower pontoon/sail factor, and many owners never buy a wet slip. They are not free. Furniture, carpet, and logs still age in the sun. A tritoon with a large outboard burns like any other 150–300 horse gasoline boat once you put hours on it.
- Price and horsepower. A 90-horse lake pontoon and a 300-horse tritoon do not share a fuel or insurance line even if both are marketed as family boats. Change horsepower and hours on the calculator instead of assuming “pontoons sip fuel.”
- Storage mode. Trailer-at-home is the cheap default in this model (a small annual stand-in, not a new trailer payment). A wet slip billed by the foot for a 22–26 foot deck adds up because pontoons are wide and you still pay for length.
- Use pattern. Pontoons shine at low-speed social hours. Cost per outing collapses if you actually go; it looks terrible if the boat sits. Set outings honestly.
- State context. Registration agency, sales-or-use tax treatment, and whether the water is a reservoir, a Great Lake, or salt all change the bill around the same hull. That block is below the calculator on this page.
Utah rules that change the bill
Agency. Utah State Tax Commission Division of Motor Vehicles (registration) and Utah State Parks (boating program). Official page: https://dmv.utah.gov/vehicles/boats-watercraft.
Registration and titling. Titles some vessels. California DMV notes Utah titles 1985-and-newer vessels. Confirm current year cutoffs with Utah DMV. Utah boat registration is a Tax Commission DMV product. State Parks runs the boating-safety and access program, including aquatic-invasive-species prevention. Read both pages before a first launch.
Sales or use tax (general). Utah has a statewide sales tax plus local taxes. Boat purchases are generally taxable. Confirm with the Tax Commission.
Boating education. Operator-age and education rules are state-specific and change. Read Utah State Tax Commission Division of Motor Vehicles (registration) and Utah State Parks (boating program) rather than assuming a neighboring state's card is enough.
Water and climate in this model. Utah recreation is Lake Powell, Bear Lake, and high-mountain reservoirs—not a conventional ocean coast. Great Salt Lake is not a typical powerboat destination. AIS inspections and a short high-country season are the local cost context. This calculator adds a winterization line in cold states. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in Utah?
- Utah State Tax Commission Division of Motor Vehicles (registration) and Utah State Parks (boating program) is the agency to start with. Utah boat registration is a Tax Commission DMV product. State Parks runs the boating-safety and access program, including aquatic-invasive-species prevention. Read both pages before a first launch.
- Does Utah charge sales or use tax on boats?
- Utah has a statewide sales tax plus local taxes. Boat purchases are generally taxable. Confirm with the Tax Commission.
- Why does this pontoon page use trailer storage by default?
- Most pontoons in this model are lake and river boats that live on a trailer. Switch the storage control to wet slip or dry stack if you have a marina quote.
- Is a tritoon cheaper to run than a V-hull of the same horsepower?
- Fuel in this calculator is driven by horsepower, engines, fuel type, hours, and load factor—not by marketing name. A 300-horse tritoon uses the same SFC math as a 300-horse bowrider.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
