Estimate center console ownership cost in Maryland
Center consoles are fishing machines: open decks, big outboards, and often a wet slip. Fuel and maintenance are built to be a larger share of price than on a pontoon.
Maryland is a Chesapeake Bay state with a short Atlantic shoreline at Ocean City and tidal rivers feeding the Bay. Slip demand around the Bay is one of the higher coastal markets in this model. Winter is milder than New England but not a 12-month Gulf season.

What makes a center console expensive to keep
A center console puts the helm in the middle so anglers can walk around the boat. The boats that show up in this calculator’s defaults are larger and more expensive than the trailerable runabouts: more length, more horsepower, more hours, and wet storage as the starting assumption because many of these boats live in coastal slips.
That mission changes the ownership stack. This model uses a higher maintenance percent of price for center consoles than for pontoons or sailboats, and it does not pretend a 300-horse (or twin) setup sips fuel. Saltwater use also means more aggressive corrosion, bottom work if you stay in a slip, and insurance questions about navigation limits and storms. The calculator will not invent a hurricane deductible; put the premium you were quoted in the insurance override.
A used 23-foot bay-and-nearshore console and a 36-foot canyon boat should not share a mental budget. Change price, length, engines, and hours. If you actually trailer a small console, switch storage to trailer—the wet-slip default is a starting point, not a rule.
- Engines. One 300-horse outboard and twins are different fuel, maintenance, and insurance conversations. The calculator multiplies SFC by engine count.
- Hours. Serious fishing hours stack fuel. Casual weekend use does not. Do not leave the default 80 hours if you go six Saturdays.
- Parking. Wet slips billed by the foot are why a 25-foot console can outspend a cheaper bowrider even at the same APR.
- Salt and storms. Coastal states add insurance and maintenance pressure this model only partly captures through the state insurance multiplier. Overrides exist for a reason.
Maryland rules that change the bill
Agency. Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Official page: https://dnr.maryland.gov/boating/Pages/default.aspx.
Registration and titling. Titles vessels. Maryland titles and registers vessels through DNR, not the MVA car counter. Maryland vessel titling and registration are DNR products. The same agency administers the boat excise tax used in place of ordinary sales tax on many vessel transfers. Official title, two-year registration, documented-decal, and excise-tax amounts are in the sourced-facts block on this page.
Sales or use tax (general). Maryland generally collects a 5% boat excise tax through DNR when a vessel is used principally in the state, rather than charging ordinary retail sales tax on the hull at a dealership counter. DNR publishes the current minimum, maximum, and late-payment rules. This calculator does not estimate that tax.
Boating education. Maryland requires a certificate of boating safety education for anyone born on or after July 1, 1972 who operates a motorized vessel on Maryland waters. Natural Resources Police publish the official rule.
Water and climate in this model. Maryland is a Chesapeake Bay state with a short Atlantic shoreline at Ocean City and tidal rivers feeding the Bay. Slip demand around the Bay is one of the higher coastal markets in this model. Winter is milder than New England but not a 12-month Gulf season. This calculator does not add a winterization line here. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Official Maryland facts
Checked on the official pages linked below. Fees and statutes change. Confirm with the agency before you pay or operate. This calculator does not collect these fees or produce a quote.
Who must register
Maryland DNR says a vessel must be registered in Maryland if it is equipped with any kind of primary or auxiliary mechanical propulsion and is used in Maryland most in a calendar year. U.S. Coast Guard documented vessels used principally in Maryland are not exempt from the vessel excise tax and must display a documented-use decal.

Title and registration fees
DNR lists a $20 title fee; a $70 registration fee for all vessels regardless of length or horsepower; a $70 documented-use decal in lieu of the registration fee for USCG-documented vessels; and a $15 security-interest filing fee if a lien is recorded. The two-year registration decal is valid for the calendar year it is issued and the next year, expiring December 31. DNR says these fees took effect October 1, 2025. This calculator’s registration line is a planning default, not a DNR invoice.

Vessel excise tax
Maryland imposes a 5% vessel excise tax on the purchase price or fair market value of vessels used principally in Maryland, with a $5 minimum and, effective July 1, 2026, a $16,100 maximum. Tax is due within 30 days of Maryland tax liability; DNR states a 10% penalty plus 1.5% interest per month if it is late. This page does not compute that tax.

Boating safety education
Maryland Natural Resources Police state that anyone born on or after July 1, 1972 must possess a certificate of boating safety education to operate a motorized vessel, carry it while operating, and show it if asked. The certificate is described as non-renewable.

Insurance regulator
Boat insurance premiums are not published by DNR or the state. Insurers and producers that operate in Maryland are regulated by the Maryland Insurance Administration, which says no Maryland law requires boat or personal watercraft insurance; a lender may require it. Get a written quote from a licensed insurer; this calculator’s insurance line is a planning default.

How this applies to a center console in Maryland
Registration fee for this page’s default length
This page’s planning default is a 25-foot center console. Maryland DNR charges a flat $70 two-year registration for all vessels regardless of length or horsepower, plus a $20 title fee when a Maryland title is issued. Length does not change the DNR registration line the way it does in Florida or Texas.

Chesapeake principal use
A center console kept on the Bay most of the calendar year is in Maryland principal use under DNR’s definition (the jurisdiction whose waters the vessel uses most from January 1 through December 31). DNR also warns that a vessel registered elsewhere may still create Maryland excise-tax liability if it remains in Maryland waters more than 90 days in a calendar year unless principal use in another jurisdiction can be shown.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in Maryland?
- Maryland Department of Natural Resources is the agency to start with. Maryland vessel titling and registration are DNR products. The same agency administers the boat excise tax used in place of ordinary sales tax on many vessel transfers. Official title, two-year registration, documented-decal, and excise-tax amounts are in the sourced-facts block on this page.
- Does Maryland charge sales or use tax on boats?
- Maryland generally collects a 5% boat excise tax through DNR when a vessel is used principally in the state, rather than charging ordinary retail sales tax on the hull at a dealership counter. DNR publishes the current minimum, maximum, and late-payment rules. This calculator does not estimate that tax.
- What official Maryland fee applies to this center console example?
- This page’s planning default is a 25-foot center console. Maryland DNR charges a flat $70 two-year registration for all vessels regardless of length or horsepower, plus a $20 title fee when a Maryland title is issued. Length does not change the DNR registration line the way it does in Florida or Texas. Source: Maryland DNR boat registration (as of 2026-10-06).
- Why is wet slip the center-console default?
- Many coastal consoles live in the water. If you trailer, switch storage to trailer so the slip line does not dominate a bill you will not pay.
- Does more horsepower always mean more maintenance in this model?
- Maintenance is a percent of boat price unless you override it. Fuel scales with horsepower, engines, hours, and load. A cheaper boat with a huge engine can still have a large fuel line.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
