Estimate cabin cruiser ownership cost in South Dakota
Cabin cruisers add beds, heads, and systems. Twin engines and a wet slip move the monthly number faster than overall length.
South Dakota boating is the Missouri River reservoir chain (Oahe, Sharpe, Francis Case, Lewis and Clark) plus smaller lakes. The season is short and this model marks the state cold. There is no ocean coastline.
Calculator defaults on this page are planning inputs, not a survey of South Dakota asking prices or marina invoices. Replace them with your listing and quotes.

What makes a cabin cruiser expensive to keep
A cabin cruiser is a family overnight boat: a cabin, usually a head, and enough systems to live aboard for a weekend. This calculator’s defaults assume a 32-foot boat, twin gasoline engines, a much higher purchase price, and wet storage. That is a planning picture, not an asking-price index.
The ownership mistake is comparing a cruiser payment to a bowrider payment. You are buying length, twins, a slip, bottom paint, and more things that break. Maintenance in this model is 4% of a larger price. Fuel is two engines times SFC. A diesel pair changes the SFC constants; switch the fuel control.
Do not shop a cabin cruiser without a written slip or mooring quote. Trailer storage is theoretically possible on smaller weekenders and impractical on many 32-foot cruisers. If you do not have a parking plan, the rest of the math is theater.
- Twin engines. The fuel formula multiplies by engine count. Two 300-horse gasoline engines are not a rounding error.
- Wet slip months. Length times a coastal per-foot rate times months in the water is how this model builds the slip line. High-slip states hurt more.
- Systems. Air-conditioning, generators, heads, and canvas do not appear as separate rows. Put the real annual shop number in the maintenance override.
- Liveaboard vs weekend. Hours and outings should match how you actually use the cabin, not the brochure weekend count.
South Dakota rules that change the bill
Agency. South Dakota Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicles (titles) and Game, Fish and Parks (boating rules). Official page: https://dor.sd.gov/individuals/motor-vehicle/boats/.
Registration and titling. Titles vessels. South Dakota boat titles and registrations are Department of Revenue motor-vehicle products. South Dakota boat titles run through the Department of Revenue motor-vehicle division. Game, Fish and Parks publishes access and on-water rules. Start with the DOR boats page for the title.
Sales or use tax (general). South Dakota has a statewide sales tax plus local taxes. Boat purchases are generally taxable. Confirm with the Department of Revenue.
Boating education. Operator-age and education rules are state-specific and change. Read South Dakota Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicles (titles) and Game, Fish and Parks (boating rules) rather than assuming a neighboring state's card is enough.
Water and climate in this model. South Dakota boating is the Missouri River reservoir chain (Oahe, Sharpe, Francis Case, Lewis and Clark) plus smaller lakes. The season is short and this model marks the state cold. There is no ocean coastline. This calculator adds a winterization line in cold states. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Title and registration
The South Dakota Department of Revenue says boat owners must apply for a title within 45 days of purchase, and title and registration are handled at the county treasurer’s office (registration can also be renewed online or at a DMV Now kiosk). DOR’s Cost/1 Year table lists $30 for “Motorboats Under 19' (includes ski jets)”, $55 for “Motorboats 19' and Over”, and $18 for “Non-Motorized Boats Over 12' and Boats Propelled by Electric Motors”. There is also a $10 certificate of title for motorized boats, plus other administrative fees. Decals go on both sides of the boat, and the registration must be kept in the boat. This calculator’s registration line uses the motorized length tier as a planning default, not a county invoice. Every calculator boat type on this site is motorized (the sailboat default includes a diesel auxiliary), so the $18 tier is listed for reference only.

Boating education
SD Game, Fish and Parks says a boating safety course is not required to operate a boat in South Dakota, but strongly recommends a NASBLA/USCG-approved course.

Insurance regulator
PWC and boat insurance premiums are not published by the state. Insurers and producers in South Dakota are regulated by the Division of Insurance, part of the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation. You can verify a company or agent’s license and file a complaint there. Get a written quote from a licensed insurer; this calculator’s insurance line is a planning default.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in South Dakota?
- South Dakota Department of Revenue, Motor Vehicles (titles) and Game, Fish and Parks (boating rules) is the agency to start with. South Dakota boat titles run through the Department of Revenue motor-vehicle division. Game, Fish and Parks publishes access and on-water rules. Start with the DOR boats page for the title.
- Does South Dakota charge sales or use tax on boats?
- South Dakota has a statewide sales tax plus local taxes. Boat purchases are generally taxable. Confirm with the Department of Revenue.
- What official South Dakota fee applies to this cabin cruiser example?
- This page’s planning default is a 32-foot cabin cruiser. The South Dakota Department of Revenue lists “Motorboats 19' and Over” at $55 per year for registration, and a $10 certificate of title for motorized boats, plus other administrative fees. This calculator’s registration line is a planning default, not a county invoice. Source: South Dakota DOR — Boats (as of 2026-10-08).
- Why are two engines the cabin-cruiser default?
- Many mid-30-foot cruisers are twins. If yours is a single, set engines to 1. Fuel and some maintenance reality will drop; the slip will not.
- Can I model a paid-off cruiser?
- Yes. Choose paid for — no loan. Insurance, slip, fuel, and maintenance remain. That is usually still the large pile.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
