Estimate cabin cruiser ownership cost in Massachusetts
Cabin cruisers add beds, heads, and systems. Twin engines and a wet slip move the monthly number faster than overall length.
Massachusetts mixes Boston Harbor, the South Shore, Cape Cod and the Islands, and inland lakes. Coastal slips in this model are among the higher Northeast rates. The season is short; winterization is expected.
Calculator defaults on this page are planning inputs, not a survey of Massachusetts asking prices or marina invoices. Replace them with your listing and quotes.

What makes a cabin cruiser expensive to keep
A cabin cruiser is a family overnight boat: a cabin, usually a head, and enough systems to live aboard for a weekend. This calculator’s defaults assume a 32-foot boat, twin gasoline engines, a much higher purchase price, and wet storage. That is a planning picture, not an asking-price index.
The ownership mistake is comparing a cruiser payment to a bowrider payment. You are buying length, twins, a slip, bottom paint, and more things that break. Maintenance in this model is 4% of a larger price. Fuel is two engines times SFC. A diesel pair changes the SFC constants; switch the fuel control.
Do not shop a cabin cruiser without a written slip or mooring quote. Trailer storage is theoretically possible on smaller weekenders and impractical on many 32-foot cruisers. If you do not have a parking plan, the rest of the math is theater.
- Twin engines. The fuel formula multiplies by engine count. Two 300-horse gasoline engines are not a rounding error.
- Wet slip months. Length times a coastal per-foot rate times months in the water is how this model builds the slip line. High-slip states hurt more.
- Systems. Air-conditioning, generators, heads, and canvas do not appear as separate rows. Put the real annual shop number in the maintenance override.
- Liveaboard vs weekend. Hours and outings should match how you actually use the cabin, not the brochure weekend count.
Massachusetts rules that change the bill

Registration and titling. Titles vessels. Massachusetts registers boats through the Boat, Recreation Vehicle and Snowmobile Registration Bureau. First-time Massachusetts boat registration is a state registration-bureau task described on Mass.gov. Environmental Police enforce on-water rules. Confirm title vs registration documents on the official first-time registration page.
Sales or use tax (general). Massachusetts has a statewide sales tax. Boat purchases are generally taxable. Confirm with the Department of Revenue.
Boating education. Operator-age and education rules are state-specific and change. Read Massachusetts Office of Boat, Recreation Vehicle and Snowmobile Registration and Massachusetts Environmental Police rather than assuming a neighboring state's card is enough.
Water and climate in this model. Massachusetts mixes Boston Harbor, the South Shore, Cape Cod and the Islands, and inland lakes. Coastal slips in this model are among the higher Northeast rates. The season is short; winterization is expected. This calculator adds a winterization line in cold states. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in Massachusetts?
- Massachusetts Office of Boat, Recreation Vehicle and Snowmobile Registration and Massachusetts Environmental Police is the agency to start with. First-time Massachusetts boat registration is a state registration-bureau task described on Mass.gov. Environmental Police enforce on-water rules. Confirm title vs registration documents on the official first-time registration page.
- Does Massachusetts charge sales or use tax on boats?
- Massachusetts has a statewide sales tax. Boat purchases are generally taxable. Confirm with the Department of Revenue.
- Why are two engines the cabin-cruiser default?
- Many mid-30-foot cruisers are twins. If yours is a single, set engines to 1. Fuel and some maintenance reality will drop; the slip will not.
- Can I model a paid-off cruiser?
- Yes. Choose paid for — no loan. Insurance, slip, fuel, and maintenance remain. That is usually still the large pile.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
