Estimate bowrider ownership cost in Texas
Bowriders are the default first runabout: a pointed bow lounge, a sterndrive or outboard, and a trailer. The payment is rarely the whole bill.
Texas has a Gulf Coast (Galveston, Corpus Christi, Laguna Madre) and a huge inland-reservoir map (Highland Lakes, Texoma, Toledo Bend, and others). This model keeps Texas in the water 12 months. Coastal saltwater boats and Hill Country lake boats do not share insurance or storage assumptions.
Calculator defaults on this page are planning inputs, not a survey of Texas asking prices or marina invoices. Replace them with your listing and quotes.

What makes a bowrider expensive to keep
A bowrider is an open day boat with seating ahead of the windshield. It is the type this site uses as the default ownership example because it is common, trailerable, and easy to compare across states. The sample defaults on this page (price, length, horsepower, hours) are planning inputs—not a survey of what bowriders sold for last month.
What you are buying is a weekend ski and swim boat, not a fishing platform and not a cabin. That keeps length and systems down, which helps insurance and maintenance percentages in this model. It does not keep fuel down if you spec a large outboard and run it hard. Sterndrives add winterization and bellows work that an outboard can avoid; the calculator does not itemize bellows, so put real shop quotes in the maintenance override.
Bowriders live or die on honest outing counts. A boat that looks fine at $900 a month is a different product at eight days a year. Use cost per outing, then decide whether a club or rental is the better stack on the compare calculator.
- Drivetrain. Outboard vs sterndrive changes winterization, corrosion, and long-term shop work more than it changes the loan formula.
- Trailer vs slip. Most bowriders trailer. A wet slip is convenience you can price; it is rarely required for a 20-foot runabout.
- Hours and load. Ski and tube days are high-load hours. If that is your use, raise the load factor or hours rather than trusting a trolling-speed mental picture.
- State rules. Registration, tax treatment, and climate (winterization vs year-round wet storage) sit in the state block below.

Agency. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Official page: https://tpwd.texas.gov/fishboat/boat/.
Registration and titling. Titles vessels. Texas titles and registers vessels through Texas Parks and Wildlife. Texas boat titles, registrations, and hull identification questions are TPWD products. County tax offices often take the paperwork; trailers go through the county, not TPWD. Official length-class fees, the $27 title, and what must be titled are in the sourced-facts block on this page.
Sales or use tax (general). TPWD’s fee chart lists sales/use tax at 6.25% of the sales price, capped at $18,750 for vessels and outboard motors purchased in Texas on or after September 1, 2019. Confirm with TPWD or the Comptroller. This calculator does not estimate that tax.
Boating education. Texas requires boater education for operators born on or after September 1, 1993 who operate a personal watercraft, a motorboat with more than 15 horsepower, or a sailboat over 14 feet. TPWD publishes accepted courses.
Water and climate in this model. This calculator does not add a winterization line here. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Official Texas facts
Checked on the official pages linked below. Fees and statutes change. Confirm with the agency before you pay or operate. This calculator does not collect these fees or produce a quote.
Who must title
TPWD requires a title for all motorized vessels regardless of length (including any sailboat with an auxiliary engine); all non-motorized vessels, including sailboats, 14 feet or longer; and internal-combustion outboard motors unless they are 40 years or older and 25 horsepower or less. Boat trailers are handled by the local county tax office, not TPWD. Title applications are due not later than 45 days from the purchase date.

Registration fees
TPWD’s fee chart lists vessel registration of $32 (less than 16 feet, Class A), $53 (16 but less than 26 feet, Class 1), $110 (26 but less than 40 feet, Class 2), and $150 (40 feet or more, Class 3). This calculator’s registration default is a planning input, not a TPWD receipt.

Title and tax amounts on the TPWD chart
The same TPWD chart lists a $27 certificate of title for a vessel or outboard motor (also $27 for transfer, standard replacement, and correction; $37 bonded title; $64 expedited “quick” replacement). Sales/use tax is listed as 6.25% of the sales price, capped at $18,750 for vessels and outboard motors purchased in Texas on or after September 1, 2019. A $15 new-resident tax applies when an owner relocates from out of state. Confirm with TPWD or the Comptroller; this page does not compute the tax.

Boater education
TPWD requires a certified boater-education course for anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 who operates a personal watercraft, a motorboat with more than 15 horsepower, or a sailboat over 14 feet. A USCG vessel-operator license satisfies the course requirement.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in Texas?
- Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is the agency to start with. Texas boat titles, registrations, and hull identification questions are TPWD products. County tax offices often take the paperwork; trailers go through the county, not TPWD. Official length-class fees, the $27 title, and what must be titled are in the sourced-facts block on this page.
- Does Texas charge sales or use tax on boats?
- TPWD’s fee chart lists sales/use tax at 6.25% of the sales price, capped at $18,750 for vessels and outboard motors purchased in Texas on or after September 1, 2019. Confirm with TPWD or the Comptroller. This calculator does not estimate that tax.
- What official Texas fee applies to this bowrider example?
- This page’s planning default is a 20-foot bowrider. On the TPWD fee chart that length is Class 1 (16 but less than 26 feet) at $53, plus a $27 title when TPWD issues one. Confirm at TPWD or a participating county tax office. Source: TPWD fee chart for boats and outboard motors (as of 2026-10-06).
- Why is the bowrider the site default?
- It is a common trailerable family boat, so the same inputs travel cleanly between the ownership, fuel, and buy-vs-rent calculators.
- Does the calculator know if my bowrider is a sterndrive?
- No. Enter horsepower, fuel type, and a maintenance override if you have sterndrive service quotes. The fuel math is SFC-based, not drivetrain-specific.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
