Estimate bowrider ownership cost in Connecticut
Bowriders are the default first runabout: a pointed bow lounge, a sterndrive or outboard, and a trailer. The payment is rarely the whole bill.
Connecticut’s expensive parking is Long Island Sound and the lower Connecticut River. The in-water season is short compared with the Gulf. Winterization and off-season storage are ordinary line items, which is why this model marks Connecticut cold.
Calculator defaults on this page are planning inputs, not a survey of Connecticut asking prices or marina invoices. Replace them with your listing and quotes.

What makes a bowrider expensive to keep
A bowrider is an open day boat with seating ahead of the windshield. It is the type this site uses as the default ownership example because it is common, trailerable, and easy to compare across states. The sample defaults on this page (price, length, horsepower, hours) are planning inputs—not a survey of what bowriders sold for last month.
What you are buying is a weekend ski and swim boat, not a fishing platform and not a cabin. That keeps length and systems down, which helps insurance and maintenance percentages in this model. It does not keep fuel down if you spec a large outboard and run it hard. Sterndrives add winterization and bellows work that an outboard can avoid; the calculator does not itemize bellows, so put real shop quotes in the maintenance override.
Bowriders live or die on honest outing counts. A boat that looks fine at $900 a month is a different product at eight days a year. Use cost per outing, then decide whether a club or rental is the better stack on the compare calculator.
- Drivetrain. Outboard vs sterndrive changes winterization, corrosion, and long-term shop work more than it changes the loan formula.
- Trailer vs slip. Most bowriders trailer. A wet slip is convenience you can price; it is rarely required for a 20-foot runabout.
- Hours and load. Ski and tube days are high-load hours. If that is your use, raise the load factor or hours rather than trusting a trolling-speed mental picture.
- State rules. Registration, tax treatment, and climate (winterization vs year-round wet storage) sit in the state block below.
Connecticut rules that change the bill
Agency. Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (registration) and Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (boating). Official page: https://portal.ct.gov/dmv.
Registration and titling. Registration only (not a title state in the CA DMV table). California DMV lists Connecticut as a nontitle vessel state. DMV still issues boat registrations. Connecticut boat registrations go through DMV. DEEP publishes safety, education, and on-water rules, including the Safe Boating Certificate. Use both agencies; a registration decal is not a substitute for the certificate.
Sales or use tax (general). Connecticut has a statewide sales and use tax. Boat purchases are generally taxable unless a statute exempts the transaction. Confirm with the Department of Revenue Services rather than this page.
Boating education. Connecticut requires a Safe Boating Certificate to operate a registered vessel, and a Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation for PWC. Details and accepted courses are on the DEEP boating-education pages.
Water and climate in this model. Connecticut’s expensive parking is Long Island Sound and the lower Connecticut River. The in-water season is short compared with the Gulf. Winterization and off-season storage are ordinary line items, which is why this model marks Connecticut cold. This calculator adds a winterization line in cold states. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in Connecticut?
- Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (registration) and Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (boating) is the agency to start with. Connecticut boat registrations go through DMV. DEEP publishes safety, education, and on-water rules, including the Safe Boating Certificate. Use both agencies; a registration decal is not a substitute for the certificate.
- Does Connecticut charge sales or use tax on boats?
- Connecticut has a statewide sales and use tax. Boat purchases are generally taxable unless a statute exempts the transaction. Confirm with the Department of Revenue Services rather than this page.
- Why is the bowrider the site default?
- It is a common trailerable family boat, so the same inputs travel cleanly between the ownership, fuel, and buy-vs-rent calculators.
- Does the calculator know if my bowrider is a sterndrive?
- No. Enter horsepower, fuel type, and a maintenance override if you have sterndrive service quotes. The fuel math is SFC-based, not drivetrain-specific.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
