Estimate bay boat ownership cost in Nevada
Bay boats sit between a skiff and a center console: skinny water, a modest V, still usually trailerable. The cost surprise is rarely the hull—it is the outboard and how you park it.
Nevada is desert-reservoir and shared-lake country: Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, and the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Water-level changes and AIS rules matter. There is no ocean coastline.

What makes a bay boat expensive to keep
A bay boat is a fishing hull for bays, sounds, and skinny water: more freeboard than a flats skiff, less of an offshore console. This calculator’s defaults keep it trailerable (about 22 feet, a single mid-size outboard, trailer storage) because that is how most bay boats are used.
Owners shop them as “not a huge center console.” That is true on slip length and often on price. It is not automatically true on fuel. A 150-horse outboard still follows the same SFC math. If you jack the horsepower to run a long commute across a sound, the fuel line looks like any other 150–200 horse gasoline boat.
Bay boats earn their keep when they launch often. They look expensive per outing when they live under a cover for 48 weeks. Use the outing field. If you are deciding between this and a true center console, duplicate the scenario and change type—do not compare dealer payments alone.
- Draft vs horsepower. The hull is for skinny water; the engine may not be. Budget the engine you will actually hang on the transom.
- Trailer life. Default storage is a trailer. A wet slip in a coastal state can erase the “smaller than a console” savings.
- Hours in a chop. Bay crossings in wind are higher-load hours than a lake idle. Raise load factor if that is your use.
- State waters. Sounds, bays, and inland reservoirs are different registration and insurance contexts. See the state block below.
Nevada rules that change the bill
Agency. Nevada Department of Wildlife. Official page: https://www.ndow.org/boating/.
Registration and titling. Titles vessels. Nevada titles and registers watercraft through the Department of Wildlife. Nevada titles and registers boats through NDOW. Official length-based annual registration, the $20 title, and the AIS decal are in the sourced-facts block on this page. New or untitled titling is in-person at an NDOW office.
Sales or use tax (general). Nevada has a statewide sales tax plus local taxes. NDOW asks for proof that sales tax has been paid on dealer, broker, or repossession sales; it says proof is not required on private-party sales. Confirm with the Nevada Department of Taxation. This page does not quote a rate.
Boating education. NDOW requires an approved boater-education course for operators born on or after January 1, 1983 before operating on Nevada interstate waters. The 2026 NDOW handbook applies that rule to motors over 15 horsepower and sets a 14-year minimum age for personal watercraft.
Water and climate in this model. Nevada is desert-reservoir and shared-lake country: Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, and the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe. Water-level changes and AIS rules matter. There is no ocean coastline. This calculator does not add a winterization line here. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Title and registration fees
NDOW lists a $20 initial certificate of ownership (title) for new, untitled, and out-of-state watercraft, and annual registration of $20 (less than 13 feet), $25 (13 feet or more but less than 18), $40 (18 or more but less than 22), $55 (22 or more but less than 26), $75 (26 or more but less than 31), and $100 (31 feet or more). Title transfer and replacement documents are listed at $20. NDOW notes prices do not include a nominal processing fee. New or untitled titling must be done in person.

Aquatic invasive species decal
NDOW’s AIS program page states that all watercraft using Nevada waters must display an Aquatic Invasive Species decal, including out-of-state craft. Costs are listed as $13 for motorized watercraft and $6 for non-motorized watercraft. The decal is required for watercraft capable of retaining water; NDOW gives paddleboards and water toys as examples that do not require the decal.

Boating education
NDOW’s apply-and-buy page says Nevada boaters born on or after January 1, 1983 must complete an NDOW-approved boater education course before operating a boat on Nevada’s interstate waters. The 2026 NDOW Handbook for Nevada Boating Laws adds that the interstate-water rule applies to vessels powered by a motor over 15 horsepower, and that a person operating a personal watercraft must be at least 14 years of age.

This page does not publish boat-insurance premiums. Insurers operating in Nevada are regulated by the Nevada Division of Insurance. Replace the calculator default with a written quote.

How this applies to a bay boat in Nevada
Registration band for this page’s default length
This page’s planning default is a 22-foot bay boat. NDOW’s annual registration for watercraft 22 feet or more but less than 26 is $55, plus a $20 title on a first Nevada certificate of ownership. Motorized craft also need the $13 AIS decal before entering Nevada waters.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in Nevada?
- Nevada Department of Wildlife is the agency to start with. Nevada titles and registers boats through NDOW. Official length-based annual registration, the $20 title, and the AIS decal are in the sourced-facts block on this page. New or untitled titling is in-person at an NDOW office.
- Does Nevada charge sales or use tax on boats?
- Nevada has a statewide sales tax plus local taxes. NDOW asks for proof that sales tax has been paid on dealer, broker, or repossession sales; it says proof is not required on private-party sales. Confirm with the Nevada Department of Taxation. This page does not quote a rate.
- What official Nevada fee applies to this bay boat example?
- This page’s planning default is a 22-foot bay boat. NDOW’s annual registration for watercraft 22 feet or more but less than 26 is $55, plus a $20 title on a first Nevada certificate of ownership. Motorized craft also need the $13 AIS decal before entering Nevada waters. Source: NDOW boat titling, registration, and more (as of 2026-10-06).
- Is a bay boat cheaper than a center console in this model?
- Defaults are cheaper because price, horsepower, hours, and storage start lower. Change those inputs to the boat you are shopping. The formulas do not apply a bay-boat discount.
- Should I use wet-slip storage for a bay boat?
- Only if you will pay for a slip. The default is trailer. Switch storage and watch the fixed pile move.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
