Estimate bay boat ownership cost in Florida
Bay boats sit between a skiff and a center console: skinny water, a modest V, still usually trailerable. The cost surprise is rarely the hull—it is the outboard and how you park it.
Florida has Atlantic and Gulf coastlines, the Intracoastal Waterway, and large inland lakes. This model keeps Florida boats in the water 12 months and uses a higher insurance multiplier than inland states. Hurricane deductibles and year-round wet slips are the local cost story; winterization is usually not.

What makes a bay boat expensive to keep
A bay boat is a fishing hull for bays, sounds, and skinny water: more freeboard than a flats skiff, less of an offshore console. This calculator’s defaults keep it trailerable (about 22 feet, a single mid-size outboard, trailer storage) because that is how most bay boats are used.
Owners shop them as “not a huge center console.” That is true on slip length and often on price. It is not automatically true on fuel. A 150-horse outboard still follows the same SFC math. If you jack the horsepower to run a long commute across a sound, the fuel line looks like any other 150–200 horse gasoline boat.
Bay boats earn their keep when they launch often. They look expensive per outing when they live under a cover for 48 weeks. Use the outing field. If you are deciding between this and a true center console, duplicate the scenario and change type—do not compare dealer payments alone.
- Draft vs horsepower. The hull is for skinny water; the engine may not be. Budget the engine you will actually hang on the transom.
- Trailer life. Default storage is a trailer. A wet slip in a coastal state can erase the “smaller than a console” savings.
- Hours in a chop. Bay crossings in wind are higher-load hours than a lake idle. Raise load factor if that is your use.
- State waters. Sounds, bays, and inland reservoirs are different registration and insurance contexts. See the state block below.
Florida rules that change the bill
Agency. Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (titles and registration) and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (boating). Official page: https://www.flhsmv.gov/motor-vehicles-tags-titles/vessels/.
Registration and titling. Titles vessels. Florida titles and registers vessels through FLHSMV. FWC publishes safety, education, and on-water rules. Florida vessel titles and registrations are an FLHSMV product. County tax collectors take the paperwork. Owners may register for one or two years and have 30 days after purchase to file. Official length-class fees and title amounts are in the sourced-facts block on this page. A registration decal is not a boating-safety ID card.
Sales or use tax (general). FLHSMV says sales tax on the purchase price is due with title and registration if it was not already paid. Confirm the current rate and any exemption with the Florida Department of Revenue. This calculator does not model those amounts.
Boating education. Florida requires a boating safety education ID card for operators born on or after January 1, 1988 who operate a boat of 10 horsepower or more. FWC publishes the current card rules. Personal watercraft have an additional 14-year minimum operator age on the FLHSMV PWC page.
Water and climate in this model. This calculator does not add a winterization line here. Months-in-the-water and slip-rate defaults are planning assumptions, not a marina rate sheet.

Official Florida facts
Checked on the official pages linked below. Fees and statutes change. Confirm with the agency before you pay or operate. This calculator does not collect these fees or produce a quote.
Who titles and registers
FLHSMV says all motorized vessels operating on Florida public waterways must be titled and registered, with applications filed at a county tax collector or license-plate-agent office. Owners may register for one year or two years. A purchaser has 30 days to title and register and must keep proof of the purchase date aboard during that window.

Titling fees
FLHSMV lists a $5.25 electronic title, $7.75 paper title, or $11 expedited title; $1 to record each existing lien; and an extra $4 titling fee for vessels previously registered outside Florida. Sales tax, if unpaid, is collected with title and registration. This calculator does not estimate those amounts.

Registration fee classes
FLHSMV’s 12-month registration table is $5.50 (less than 12 feet), $16.25 (12 to less than 16), $28.75 (16 to less than 26), $78.25 (26 to less than 40), $127.75 (40 to less than 65), $152.75 (65 to less than 110), and $189.75 (110 or more). Those class amounts do not include the $2.25 service fee and $0.50 FRVIS fee. Some counties add an optional county fee listed on the same FLHSMV page. Confirm the invoice at the county office.

Boating safety education ID
FWC requires anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 who operates a boat with an engine of 10 horsepower or more to complete an approved course and obtain a Florida Boating Safety Education ID card. FWC says the card does not expire and is not a boating license.

Insurance regulator
This page does not publish boat-insurance premiums or hurricane deductibles. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation licenses and regulates insurance companies operating in Florida. Replace the calculator’s insurance default with a written quote.

How this applies to a bay boat in Florida
Registration class for this page’s default length
This page’s planning default is a 22-foot bay boat. On the FLHSMV table that length is Class 1 (16 to less than 26 feet), with a $28.75 12-month registration fee before the $2.25 service fee, $0.50 FRVIS fee, and any optional county fee. Confirm the invoice at a county tax collector. The calculator registration default is not that invoice.

Questions
- Who registers a boat in Florida?
- Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (titles and registration) and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (boating) is the agency to start with.
- Does Florida charge sales or use tax on boats?
- FLHSMV says sales tax on the purchase price is due with title and registration if it was not already paid. Confirm the current rate and any exemption with the Florida Department of Revenue. This calculator does not model those amounts.
- What official Florida fee applies to this bay boat example?
- This page’s planning default is a 22-foot bay boat. On the FLHSMV table that length is Class 1 (16 to less than 26 feet), with a $28.75 12-month registration fee before the $2.25 service fee, $0.50 FRVIS fee, and any optional county fee. - Is a bay boat cheaper than a center console in this model?
- Defaults are cheaper because price, horsepower, hours, and storage start lower. Change those inputs to the boat you are shopping. The formulas do not apply a bay-boat discount.
- Should I use wet-slip storage for a bay boat?
- Only if you will pay for a slip. The default is trailer. Switch storage and watch the fixed pile move.
- What costs are included in the all-in monthly number?
- Loan principal and interest (unless the boat is paid for), insurance, slip or trailer storage, winterization in cold states, registration, estimated fuel, and maintenance. Most of this bill shows up whether you launch or not.
- What if the boat is paid for?
- Choose Paid for — no loan. Principal and interest drop to zero. Insurance, storage, fuel, and maintenance still count. Buy vs rent treats the purchase price as cash paid up front.
- Is the loan rate a real quote?
- No. The default APR is an illustration rate, not a lender quote. Enter the rate on an offer you actually have.
- How is fuel burn estimated?
- Gasoline uses 0.50 lb/hp-hr specific fuel consumption and 6.2 lb/gal fuel weight. Diesel uses 0.40 and 6.9. Cruise gallons per hour is wide-open-throttle burn times a load factor (default 65%). This is an SFC estimate, not a sea trial.
- What does year-5 underwater mean?
- If the remaining loan balance after five years is higher than the depreciated boat value (15% the first year, then 10% per year), the loan is underwater in this model.
